I've spent thirty years in technology, and most of what I know about delivery I learned the hard way: on trading floors where a broken feed costs real money by lunchtime, and in my own life, where the plan rarely survives first contact.

 

I started in 1995 supporting back-office servers in Mumbai. I taught myself to build, moved to London, and wrote Java for JPMorgan's trade-capture systems before I was asked to run them. By 2005 I was running them: a $3–5m programme serving 3,000 users across EMEA, with sixty people in Mumbai reporting into it.

 

Since then I have taken on the projects that arrive with a deadline and a regulator attached. Remediating model-control deficiencies at HSBC under external audit. Cutting a compliance service's time-to-market from fifteen days to three. Moving seventeen real-time FTSE Russell index platforms to AWS and Azure for LSEG with a team of seventy. None of it went to plan. All of it shipped.

 

Then a health scare stopped me in my tracks, and I had to apply the same discipline to myself. I got on a bike. Cycling gave me back my stamina and a club of friends, and the club gave me a problem worth solving: a 22,000-line iOS app I designed, built and shipped end to end, with an edge backend and AI-assisted tooling. Thirty years in, I learned Swift from scratch because the people around me needed something that didn't exist.
