In detail

JPMorgan · 2005 to 2012 · Project Manager, Rates Sales and Marketing Technology

Retiring a legacy web component in favour of the strategic rich-client platform, cutting a parallel code base and the cost that came with it.

Scale: budget $0.5m · 3 FTE · 6 months

The challenge

Two components did the same job. The older web one was slow, off-strategy and expensive to run alongside its replacement. Every business except Commodities agreed to migrate; Commodities was waiting on a delayed move to the Athena platform and could not commit.

What I did

  • Built the business case and a cost report for supporting the old component, with product-by-product analysis of volumes, operating model, regions and dependencies.

  • Negotiated with the Commodities middle-office head and business managers on a support-only path for their components.

  • Decommissioned unused trade types and their web components, and re-implemented the in-use types on the rich-client platform for Rates, GEM and Credit.

Outcome

  • Technology team reported a 30% cost reduction, with faster release cycles and higher output.
