Moving FTSE Russell's real-time index platforms to the cloud

In detail

LSEG · April 2020 to July 2022 · Programme Manager, Cloud Migration (consultant)

Seventeen real-time index-building applications moved from ageing on-premise estate to AWS and Azure, without disrupting a business that publishes indices the market trades on.

Scale: 17 real-time applications · project teams of 70 across network, development, architecture, cloud engineering, test and production support

The challenge

The platforms were technically obsolete and the FCA had been given committed milestones for retiring them. Several depended on vendor products that needed upgrading before they could run in the cloud, and every move had to clear Compliance, Legal, Procurement and Risk approvals around cloud compliance and data privacy.

What I did

  • Defined scope and priorities with the cloud board so index publication was never put at risk.

  • Reported progress against the FCA-committed milestones.

  • Sequenced vendor upgrades, code refactoring and extensive testing per platform.

  • Ran the stringent approval process for cloud compliance and data privacy.

Outcome

  • Real-time index-building platforms delivered on AWS and Azure.

  • Technical obsolescence removed from the FTSE Russell index estate.

Skills: Cloud migration (AWS, Azure) · Regulatory milestone reporting · Vendor management · Large distributed teams
